How prioritising YOU can make you a better mum

It’s no secret that #mumlife can be equal parts rewarding and brutal. It is certainly not an easy ride, but prioritising you and your self-care can help you to be a better mum (well maybe some of the time anyway!)

Mum life is 24/7, so it is really important you look after yourself. As the saying goes, if you are not in good health both physically and mentally, how can you expect to take care of others?

Self-care is one of those phrases that is starting to sound a little cliche and it seems everyone is talking about it. There are a number of ways of thinking about self-care and it doesn’t have to be all bubble baths, facials and massages – although these things can absolutely help!

I like to think about self-care as your little ways to stay happy, sane, energised and able to keep up with your kids!

These can include anything from enjoying a quiet cup of tea, reading a book, asking for help to run the kids around, meeting a friend for a walk in the sunshine, meeting the girls for dinner and a wine, attending regular exercise or yoga sessions or social groups… Basically it can be anything that makes you feel energised, happy or relaxed.

It could even be more specific.  A mother that isn’t taking care of herself as far as injury, illness or mental health goes is also going to be operating at sub-optimal capacity to be giving to others, including their children and partners.

If you are constantly in pain or suffering with mental health issues then you are also not able to give your best to your little ones.

If this is the case, the best self-care is to take some time to work on yourself. Book in to see a health professional to help you plan a way forward and to support you in your progress towards feeling better, stronger, and more energised. Sometimes even just making a plan forward can help you feel like you are heading in the right direction.

Self-care can also look like healthy eating and making healthy lifestyle choices.  When things are busy and time is tight, fast food can seem like an easy option. Truth is though, it won’t be long until this food will have you feeling sluggish, and could even have your mental health taking a dive.

The same goes for late nights. When life is busy, it is really tempting to stay up late and take some time for yourself to unwind and relax. Whilst this seems like a great idea at the time, doing this can also leave you feeling tired and sluggish the next day. Sleep is a free form of self-care. Try your best to get to bed early whenever possible and you will start to feel the difference both physically and mentally.

By taking the best care of yourself, you are in a much better position to be a happier, healthier and more energetic mum! No need to feel mum guilt!
